Ancient city trip Rewrote

June 3rd, 2009 · No Comments

HI everyone remember the post I wrote before about our ancient city trip? well today I rewrote it to make it much better. Compare the two and comment telling me which one is better.

My favorite event this year was the field trip to the ancient city. I know it sounds very boring, but you should think again. It was very fun. We rode bikes, and raced up high temples with lots of stairs. There was also a treasure hunt between all the classes that went. We learned a lot about old monks and Buddhas. We also learned that a long time ago, there was a big war with Burma. We learned that some of the statues there were built over 400 years ago! When we climbed a temple that had over 100 stairs, me Matt and Gwen raced to see who gets there first. We all got there at about the same time. At about 12:30 we ate lunch. It was very good. For dessert we had ice cream. Though next time I go there, I would like to explore more, for example the temples, because we didn’t have lots of time, so we only saw 9 temples. At the end, we had time to buy things. I bought a mini fan. There are lots of cheap things there. If you ever go there, you should take a bag with:
Snacks (in case hunger strikes)
Camera (to take pictures of the amazing things)
Money (to buy things at the end)
A helmet (to be safe when riding the bike)
PSP/Game boy/DS or any other game system. Fully charge it before the trip. (It’s a long bus ride, so you should keep yourself entertained!)

This is inside one of the temples.

This is my favorite picture!

The amazing yeast experiment…

May 27th, 2009 · No Comments

Hi. In science we did something very cool I would like to tell you about.

Yeast Experiment

Back in December, we wanted to check if we can activate yeast, and also at the same time, test how much sugar different cereals have. So we took yeast, put it in a sealed bag, and crushed up the cereal. Then we put the crushed cereal in the bag with the yeast. Then we put the bag in a bath with hot water- 35-50 degrees for about 10 minutes, and then saw which bag puffed up the most. We learned that when yeast doesn’t have food and water, it is dormant, and doesn’t do much. But when it is with food and water, it is activated and when it is activated, it exhales CO2. That’s why the bags puffed.

In this picture, it shows how he bags puffed after the experiment.

The best book I have ever read…….

May 24th, 2009 · No Comments

Hi everyone. This is my favorite book. It’s the best book I read all this year!

My Life as a fifth grade Comedian” is a book I read and really liked. I want you to recommend it to you. It’s about a kid always gets in trouble because he doesn’t do homework. He might be kicked out of school just like his older brother. He only has one more month to get all his homework done. Then he has to do a project. And that’s when he makes the first made-up laugh-off become real.

I really enjoyed reading that book. You would definitely like it if you like funny books, RF fiction books, books with social issues and stories about people’s troubles in life.

If you want more information about that book, please comment with your question, don’t worry, I will answer it.

Idan’s realistic fiction story

May 14th, 2009 · 1 Comment

Hi this is my story. It’s about a boy who moves to New York, and has a hard time there.

Hope you enjoy!!!

New York
By: Idan

“And now kids,” said, said Ms. Lucy, my new 5th grade teacher. “We will play a quick game of bingo before the first day of school ends.” Everyone cheered. So did I, but just so I wouldn’t be the only one quiet. But I liked homework. And I knew the teacher forgot about it, so I said: “Wh-wh what about homework?
“Oh yes! I forgot!” she said. Then she added: “ Oh my Mark, I didn’t know you stutter.” Yes”, I said with a shrug. Then she also added: Sorry kids we are not going to play bingo. Everyone, please take out your agendas and write: Read 1 hour. 3 math sheets. A spelling paper. And write how your first day of school went.” She gave us the math sheets, as everyone took out their agendas. Everyone had a really mad and angry and annoyed and face as they wrote.

When I got on the bus, I felt great. That was until a kid from my class I didn’t talk came up to me and said: “Teacher’s pet!”
W-w-why do you think so?” I said confused.
“You reminded the teacher about our homework and made us have homework on the first day of school, then just smiled! And by the way my name is Eric.” Then he punched me in the stomach, and quickly opened my new lunch bag, and took my five left over dollars as I was getting my air back in. I couldn’t believe it. My monthly allowance was gone, just like that.

It was now two full weeks of school, and finally the weekend, when I joined the lottery (which I did every week in my old place and never won anything except for $50 which I had to give to my parents). On Sunday, I went bowling with my family, and lost terribly. Then we ate at McDonalds. But I accidently dropped my meal on the floor. I didn’t want a new meal. Then we ate Ice cream. They ran out of the only flavor I like, Mango.
When we got home, I thought: This is the worst day of my life! In fact, ever since I got here, I have had only bad and lonely days!  I didn’t know what to do. Then I had an idea. But the more I thought about it, the more I knew it wouldn’t work. And then I fell asleep, knowing I’ll have another bad day tomorrow.

Guess what? My prediction came true. In school that Monday we had a valentine dance. Everyone hated me, so I just sat near the food table. But then Eric came and ruined my peace. He poured all of his lemonade on my head. I felt my face turn red. I really wanted to show him that I don’t give up so easily. So I took a cupcake and threw it at him. Boolzie! Right in his fat nose. By then, just about everyone was looking at us. There were no teachers in the room. I saw his face turn red. Then, he took a slice of pizza and threw it at me. I ducked, but THAT didn’t help. It hit my shoes, and they looked like the shoes they made 100 years ago. They were all red with tomato sauce. I couldn’t let that stop. So I took a banana, opened it and threw it at him. It missed. Everyone laughed. At me. Then a teacher came. So we stopped. But I knew one thing for sure; everyone knew I was a loser.

That Saturday morning happened the absolute best thing that has happened to me since we got here; in fact, probably all my life. I checked the newspaper because I was bored and because there was nothing interesting on T.V. and guess what? I saw my name in it! I read the whole article about 10 times, then took the newspaper, and ran to the place that I joined the lottery.
When I got to the place, it was completely empty. I ran to the seller, and showed him the paper, extremely excited. Very well, he said, excitement in his voice. He took out my lottery sheet. He scanned it for about five minutes, and then started scanning the newspaper. It took a long time, but I really didn’t care. I probably won the lottery! But how much money did I win? Was it 50 dollars like last time? Would I have to give the money to my parents? It was another 10 minutes before he said: “congratulations, little boy. You have won 1 million dollars!” I couldn’t believe it. I felt my heart jump all around my stomach. “I…I…I…” I tried to get the words out but my stutter problem wouldn’t let it. So instead, I just said: “Wh-wh-wh- where do I g-g- get the mo-money?” Dang my mouth! I guess he understood me because I saw him taking a piece of paper out of a drawer and giving it to me. It was the check for the million dollars I fairly earned. I quickly took, didn’t say thank-you because I knew it was one of the hardest words for me to say because of my stutter. I got out of the place running. Even though I knew it was a bad idea, I screamed at the top of my voice (After checking there was no one on the street) “After 5 y-y-years of trying, I ha-have f-f-finally won t-the l-l-l-lottery!”

I came home excitedly. I ran to my room with the check in my sweaty hand. MOM!!! I yelled. No answer. DAD!!! I yelled again. NO answer. Mike! Julie! Harry! No answer. Strange, I thought. No one is at home.
About 2 full hours past when my mom came home. She was pretty sad, I could tell; no doubt. “How are you?” she asked me as if nothing happened. OKAY, I replied. I wanted to keep the surprise until dinner. “I was at an orphanage. Everyone there is so poor and sad. So I decided to give that orphanage some money. I thought a thousand dollars would make them happy, my mom said. Seriously?!?! I asked surprised. She nodded.

At dinner we all sat. We just had rice on the table. I already went to the bank to change the money into cash. I hid all of it under my mattresses. One of the things my family didn’t know was that I ordered pizza.
“Sorry I couldn’t make anything but rice”, said my mom. Just then the doorbell rang. I went to get it and it was the pizza. I paid the guy (with my money) took the pizzas and closed the door. “Who was it?” asked mike, my oldest brother. I entered the kitchen, singing: “Pizza guy!” Then I told them about the lottery and how I won. They all asked me things and seemed very happy.

That night I couldn’t sleep. It didn’t really matter, because tomorrow would be Sunday. I didn’t know what to do with the money. So I got out of bed, and made a list with all the possible smart things to do. Then I remembered that orphanage mom was at. So added it to the list. About 2 hours past and midnight struck. I made up my mind. I was going to donate the money to that orphanage.

That Monday I put all the money in a bag. When I got to school, I gave it to my teacher and said: please give this to an orphanage. And please don’t look what’s inside until you get to the orphanage.
“OK” she said.

School was almost over when someone I didn’t know came in our classroom, gave out teacher what seemed like an envelope and left. Ms. Lucy opened it, and there was a note inside. She read it. Then looked up. At me. Oh Oh, I thought what now?
“I can’t believe this, Mark! Why did you do it? Why did you donate one million dollars?!”
Noooo!!! I thought. Everyone would hate me even more for being “Mr.Goody!” But instead, happened the craziest thing in the world. Everyone clapped. Even Eric “the bully”.

After school, everyone was telling me how nice I was, and that they were sorry for being mean to me. And just about everyone asked me the same question, “How did you get the money?” which was too complicated to answer, because when I said lottery, they just laughed, with disbelief. I tried to coward out of the crowd, and managed to do it, but nearly. When I walked out the school gate, I saw Eric with his whole gang. And I saw Eric starting to walk to me. Oh Oh, I thought. I was just planning on making a run for it, but then happened the 2nd craziest thing in the world in one day. Instead of Eric Punching or pounding me, He said: “Nice!”
I couldn’t believe it. After all these fights and bad times with Eric, HE
was complimenting ME? It just didn’t seem right.
Then he added: “I am sorry I was such a jerk to you. I guess you are a nice guy after all. Sorry for everything else that happened too. And here, have the 5 dollars I took from you on that bus ride the 1st day of school. He took it out of his pocket, gave it to me and left.
Hi, this is my RF fiction story.

Idan Teaching Historical Fiction Strategies!

April 9th, 2009 · 2 Comments

Hi Everyone!

This is Idan teaching HF strategies!

I was reading a book called Crispin. I used Historical Fiction strategies by asking myself: How would I feel if I was him in that situation?
For example, when Crispin was climbing up a chimney, I thought he was scared but actually was not. I would be very scared because someone might light the chimney and I would burn. In addition, I might fall down the chimney. That tells me that back in the old times, people weren’t scared of dying. Another example is when his most loyal friend was being captured and was being tortured, I thought: How would I feel? What would I do? Crispin decided to save his friend and almost dies. If I were Crispin, I would probably run away as far as possible before I was captured too. That tells me that in the old days, people really cared about their friends. Even though we care about friends these days, I don’t think anyone would almost kill himself for someone else.

This is a great HF novel and I really recommend you read it.

Is Albert Einstein important? Idan

February 1st, 2009 · No Comments

I have 4 questions for you.  The first question is: Do you know who Albert Einstein is? You probably heard the name before, but do you know what he did that made him so famous? Did you know he developed many things and inspired scientists and other people? Do you want to know more about him? Then keep reading!

I think Albert Einstein is important because he developed many things. For example, he made a nuclear bomb. That really changed the world because USA won the war against Japan thanks to that. It also helped end World War 2. Another example of why he is important is he found out the theory of relativy. E=mc2 (E=Energy M=Mass C2= Speed of light squared). The meaning of that is, for example, if you are on a train, and suppose you drop a book, the book will fall straight down, and not in angles. Also, if you drop a book out of the window, it will look like it is going backwards but actually staying at the same place. This is important because it helps to know about speed.

Another reason of why he is important is he inspired many people that you don’t have to successful in school to do amazing things. Albert Einstein was a horrible student in school (except for math and science) but when he was older, he was a genius and was the smartest person of the twentieth century. In addition, he inspired many scientists to learn about space travel and atomic energy. Space travel is important because you can explore the universe, or predict if an asteroid is going to hit Earth, and some other stuff. Atomic energy is important because it is very powerful and useful. For example, doctors use it as radiation for cure cancer. It is also good because it doesn’t pollute as much as normal electricity.

So next time someone calls you Albert Einstein just for fun, you can know they mean that you found out atomic energy and inspired scientists and some other people to learn and do amazing things!

Ancient city trip! Idan

December 19th, 2008 · No Comments

A few days ago, we went on a fun field trip. We went to ancient city. We had a big treasure hunt. There were lots of kids from 5th grade there. We had to use old weird looking bikes. I had to use a bike that looks like it came from the circus! The wheels were tiny but the bike was big! I really liked the part that we had to climb a TITANIC mountain, with lot of stairs. It was very tiring, but when I made it up, I could see how much I have climbed. I also liked it when we got to buy things. I bought some candy a fan and super strong magnets.

I think I was an explorer because I asked questions and wandered around to find out more about that place. I found out that some of the things were from about 400 years ago! Next time I would like to look at more of the statues and buddas becasue we didn’t have lots of time , so we only saw 9 statues and temples. If I ever go back there, I would like to know how they know from how long the temples existed.
