Hello again! I just finished a book yesterday which was one of the best books ever! Read more to learn more!
In my opinion, I think that the best movie and book is, drum roll please, TWILIGHT!!!!! It is like every girl’s favorite thing, well in our class of course and in some other classes. At first when my friends talked about I had no clue what they were talking about until my friend invited me over and we watched it together. When she turned it off, I nearly screamed it was so good. And even for my birthday I got the book! Now I love it!! One of my favorite parts of the book and movie, was the baseball scene. they played this awesome music, and had a amazing pitcher, Alice! Ugh, it was so good!!!!!! Right now I am going to tell you a little about the Cullens and Bella! (the main characters) By the way, they are all foster kids, except for Bella, so some of them will be boyfriend and girlfriend with each other, but that is just because they are not really brother and sister.
Bella-Pretty, tomboy, new in school, parents are divorced, shy, sporty, nice
Edward- Fast, strong, handsome, protective, reads minds, vampire
Alice- Nice, pretty, sweet, sporty, great baseball pitcher, a girlfriend to Jasper, loves fashion, likes throwing parties, can see the future, fast, strong, vampire
Jasper- Shy, sporty, a boyfriend to Alice, fast, strong, vampire
Rosaline- Pretty, not very helpful, good at baseball, snob, a girlfriend to Emmett, fast, strong, vampire
Emmett-Bald, a boyfriend to Rosaline, nice, helpful, fast, strong, vampire
Now you know all about the Cullens and Bella. Well. to learn even more, watch the movie. And for boys if you like sports watch the movie because there is an awesome baseball scene!!!
By the way, this is where I got the information.

Hi everybody, did you know that we will all die if you keep littering and killing our planet??? This is pretty much a comment to Sophie’s post but I just thought that I should tell you myself. My mom has been picking up garbage FOREVER!!! She is like a whole new mom because when my brother turned 4, he made a wish that he could clean up the earth. And so since then, she has been picking up garbage and even swimming in lakes downtown to get all of the garbage out! She is doing that to try and help our families and our earth so when you see a piece of garbage on the ground, pick it up because you will be doing a good deed for every single human being and animal on the whole entire planet!! =)
Thank you!!!

Joe just finished up his breakfast then went outside to build a fort out of boxes and blankets. He was almost finished when he heard noises and laughter. All of the kids on the block were playing outside! Now this is a perfectly normal morning in his town. He heard the front door open and he immediately knew it was his mom, because his dad passed away when he as just 3 ½. But still, a perfectly normal morning.
“Mom,” Joe began “I want to live outside.” It was so painful for Joe to say that too such a sanitary women. Joe turns around, he sees his mom with a worried look on her face, as always. “Joe,” she said in a shaky voice. “I was just watching the news, and it said that there have been rabid animals and gangs roaming around the town, so I’m going to need you to stay inside.” His mom tried to bribe him into coming inside, but getting that boy inside is going to take a lot of work. “No way!” Joe yelled. “My fort will protect me.” He continued. Then Joe stomped off and goes inside his fort (which he is almost finished with) “Good luck my son, you will need it.” Said Joe’s mom with a tear in her eye, turned around and walks into the house in silence, but Joe could hear her tear drop slowly his the green grass.
The next day, Joe did not take the bus, when he went to school, he walked. His friend George caught up to him in a hurry. “ Hey Joe!” he called wiping the sweat from his face. “ How’s your plan working out about living outside?” “Not so good.” Joe replied, “My mom said that she heard on the news that there have been rabid animals and gangs around so she wants me to stay inside.” Joe said. He saw the flag of the school over the hill. “Oh yeah! I heard about that on channel 5.” George pointed out. “You too?” Joe yelled. “Now everyone’s against me!” Joe started to run. “Wait!” George yelled. “I’m sorry!” But he was to late; Joe was already in the school waiting to go home.
…………… * * *
While Joe was walking home, he saw that no were kids playing outside and Joe is normally late to go home! Not even the mailman was outside and he is always outside talking to Mrs. Baker. He looked into the window of his friend Charlie’s house. He and his mom were curled up in the corner with blankets and pillows hovering over them. “What’s going on? Something is not right!” Joe continued to walk. Just then, Joe heard footsteps. He turns around and sees a gang with three members to it. “Grrrrrrr!” Behind the gang were three dogs with foam coming out of their mouths. It was all coming back to him now. The news, George, his mom! Gangs and rabid dogs! Each dog was belonging to an angry gang member!
That was it, Joe started to run. He ran as fast as he possibly could until he got to his house. He slowed down but they were right on his heals. He reached for the door but then he heard a noise that hurt him to hear. It was as bad as lightning and as rough as a lions roar. And those very words said. “What? Are you going to go cry to your mommy?” That was exactly what Joe wanted to do. He reached for the doorknob and started to turn, but to his surprise, it wouldn’t budge. It… was… locked!
“Think fast” Joe thought. He dove behind the bush by the window while the chasers backs were turned. He scooped up a couple of pebbles and tossed them quietly at the window, trying to be a quiet as possible. Then, he saw a shadow that crept up to the window. And Joe. With no movement put a huge smile on his face because it was his mom! Right when the window opened just a crack, Joe blabbed away, but very quietly. “Mom I am so sorry I did not believe you about the- He was interrupted.
“Honey it’s ok, now come inside before you’re cut up like fried sushi.
Joe peeked out from behind the bush to see if the gangs, with their hot red eyes were watching. After one glance, he dashed across the yard to the backdoor, but he wasn’t as quiet as he planned because the gang and the dogs were right behind him. Joe finally decided he had to, it was his only chance, and he stopped. He turned around to see the chasers n shock to see him standing there with his hand in front of him waving hi pointer finger. Joe started to step back, but the gangs moved closer with the dogs behind him barking. He kept on stepping back until he was as close to the backdoor as he needed. With his eyes tightly shut, re reached for the door and jumped inside and locked the door. He was safe!
When hr got inside, he saw his mom on the couch. He went and sat down next to her and cried in her lap. “I’m sorry I did not listen to you.” Joe said muffled in his mom’s T-shirt. “I promise to sleep and eat and play inside and to only go outside when I really, really, need to.” “Thank you!” After that, they were back to a perfectly normal afternoon.

Hello everyone,
After some unfortunate delays, we now have the next two installments of Room 229’s Historical Fiction Podcast Series available on iTunes.
Tamara, Emma, Karis and Juliana refer to Goldstone, and teach about building the world of the story in your mind.
Tasha, Helen, and Sophie refer to Esperanza Rising, and teach about walking in the main character’s shoes.

Hi! This is Emma with some strategies you could try out!! The book that I will be getting examples from is “Goldstone”.
This semester we have been working on historical fiction strategies. Two strategies that I mostly use is building the world of the story in your mind by noticing the details that make the characters life different to your own. When you use this strategy, you have to compare the characters lifestyle to your own. An example I used from my book is when Karin’s whole entire town is being abandoned just because the Canadian Pacific Railway shut down, and now-a-days everybody does not relay on a train to take us where we need to go because we use cars. That may have happened because my book takes place in 1900 near a Canadian Mountain town.
Another strategy is to ask yourself, who has the power? Who is in charge of that scene or paragraph? An example that I will use is when Karin decides to go find her dad instead of going to a dance with her friend Stuart. I think that Karin has the power because it is her choice to go save her dad instead of being with Stuart. Those 2 strategies are really helpful, one strategy that I would recommend, is putting yourself in your character’s shoes; try to experience what is happening to your character. I hope you try out these strategies and make reading fun!
Peace

A lot of people have favorite explorers. Who’s yours? People like different explorers because of the stuff they do now or the stuff they did then. I think Pedro Cabral is an important explorer to history because of his discovery of Brazil, his heroism, and his generosity.
Pedro Cabral is a discoverer because he discovered Brazil in 1511. He was heading to India when he discovered Brazil because he was sent to India by the king to get more spices, jewels, and food. Cabral did not mean to find Brazil. He was going too far west from India. He was moving towards land (which was not India) because of a strong gust of wind. Then he bumped into land, which he named Brazil because of the Brazil wood used to make red dye.
Cabral is a hero because he saved his men by killing the people of Calicut. The people of Calicut were trying to kill Cabral’s men because they were trying to steal their food, spices and jewels. After Cabral killed some of the men there were 2 men left who surrendered. When they surrendered, the 2 men handed over the jewels, food and spices. Cabral is also a hero because of when he saw 24 sick men on a boat. When he saw those men he saved them by waving Brazil wood around their noses. After that the men were healthy and well again. The Brazil wood has a special chemical that makes you stronger and feel better.
Cabral is generous because gave Vasco de Gama a chance to be famous by letting him take over his expedition. Vasco de Gama took over his expedition because Cabral wanted to go home and have a family. When he took over the expedition, De Gama finished the journey to India and got the jewels and spices. Cabral soon was home, got married and had 6 children.
Therefore, Cabral is a very important explorer. He is an important because of his discovery of Brazil, his heroism, and his generosity. I hope you learned something that Pedro Alveres Cabral did!

On Wednesday, my class went to Muang Baron, but I didn’t. I was stuck at home with a really bad fever. My mom told me that when I was sleeping my face was so red. On Tuesday, in the middle of the night I started throwing up. When I got into my mom’s room to sleep she told me I was skipping school. What I would have explored was the mountain with the temple at the top that gets smaller and smaller. I have been to Muang Baron about 15 times. When I was there I saw a deer get shot so I ran to the guy who shot it and started hitting him and taking his gun away. The deer was screeching and yelling and a baby deer and a daddy deer were surrounding the one that got shot so I thought it was the mama. So that was my day at home!!!

Here are some good strategies for reading non-fiction:
One good strategy for reading non-fiction is to use the table of contents or the index to find certain information. This is very useful when you are doing a report on something.
Another strategy for reading a non-fiction book for a report is making a lot of post-its to hold on to the information that you think is important. Then if you put the post-its in a notebook so you know where they are. This is also very useful when you are doing a report.
Looking at the picture and back at the words is another good strategy for reading non-fiction. It can be really helpful when you don’t understand the picture.
Signed,
Gwen, Karis, Emma
